GENESIS
Genesis 1
In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was invisible and unformed, darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening, and there was morning: one day.
6 And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters"; and it was so. 7 And God made the firmament; and God separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven; and God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning: the second day.
9 And God said, "Let the waters under heaven be gathered together, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so. And the waters under heaven were gathered together, and the dry land appeared. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gatherings of the waters he called Seas; and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth herb of grass yielding seed after its kind and after its likeness, and fruit tree bearing fruit, in which is its seed after its kind upon the earth"; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth herb of grass yielding seed after its kind and after its likeness, and fruit tree bearing fruit, in which is its seed after its kind upon the earth; 13 and God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning: the third day.
14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven for a light upon the earth, to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years; 15 and let them be for a light in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth"; and it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning: the fourth day.
20 And God said, "Let the waters bring forth reptiles having life and breath, and birds flying above the earth throughout the firmament of heaven"; and it was so. 21 And God made the great sea creatures, and every living, moving creature which the waters brought forth after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be increased and multiplied, fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning: the fifth day.
24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: quadrupeds, reptiles, and beasts of the earth after their kind"; and it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and all the reptiles of the earth after their kind; and God saw that it was good. 26 And God said, "Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness; and let them rule the fish of the sea, and the birds of the air, and the cattle, and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep upon the earth." 27 And God made man: he made him in the image of God; he made them male and female. 28 And God blessed them, saying, "Be increased and multiplied, fill the earth and have dominion over it; and rule the fish of the sea, and the birds of the air, and all the cattle, and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep upon the earth." 29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed fit for sowing which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree having in itself the fruit of seed fit for sowing; it shall be to you as food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth, and to all the birds of the air, and to every reptile that creeps upon the earth having in itself the breath of life, have I given every green herb for food"; and it was so. 31 And God saw all that he had made; and behold, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning: the sixth day.
Genesis 2
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their adornment. 2 On the sixth day God finished his works, which he had made; and on the seventh day he rested from all his works, which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, because on it he rested from all his works, which God had begun to make.
4 This is the book of the generations of heaven and earth, when they had their birth: In the day that the Lord God made the heavens and the earth, 5 before any green plant of the field was upon the earth, and before any herb of the field had sprung up; for God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, nor was there a man to till it; 6 but a spring came up from the ground, and watered all the face of the earth. 7 And God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his face the breath of life; and man became a living being.
8 And God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground God caused every tree to spring up that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, whence it separated into four branches. 11 The name of the first is Pishon: it is that which encompasses all the land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good; garnet and greenstone are there also. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: it is that which encompasses all the land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Tigris: it is that which flows before Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
15 And the Lord God took the man whom he had formed, and set him in the garden of delight to tend it and to keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded Adam, saying, "Of every tree that is in the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat; for in the day you eat of it you shall surely die."
18 And the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a helper in his likeness." 19 And out of the ground God yet formed all the beasts of the field, and all the birds of the air; and he brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name. 20 And Adam gave names to all the cattle, and to all the birds of the air, and to all the beasts of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper in his likeness. 21 And God brought an ecstasy upon Adam, and he slept. And he took one of his ribs, and filled up its place with flesh. 22 And God fashioned the rib, which he had taken from Adam, into a woman, and brought her to Adam. 23 And Adam said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman, for from her man was she taken." 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. 25 And the two of them were naked, both Adam and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Genesis 3
Now the serpent was the wisest of all the beasts that were upon the earth, which the Lord God had made. And the serpent said to the woman, “Why did God say, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “Of the fruit of the trees of the garden, we may eat; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 And the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die; 5 for God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened; and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.” 6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant for the eyes to behold, and beautiful to contemplate; and taking of its fruit, she ate. And she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves girdles.
8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the evening; and both Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 And the Lord God called Adam, and said to him, “Adam, where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you walking in the garden; and I was afraid, because I am naked, and I hid.” 11 And God said to him, “Who told you that you are naked, unless you have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, ‘Of this alone do not eat’?” 12 And Adam said, “The woman, whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” 13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 And the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all the cattle, and above all the beasts that are upon the earth. Upon your breast and your belly shall you go; and you shall eat earth all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall keep watch for your head, and you shalt keep watch for his heel.” 16 And to the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your grief and your groaning; in grief you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall have dominion over you.” 17 And to Adam he said, “Because you hearkened to the voice of your wife, and ate from the tree, of which I commanded you, ‘Of this alone do not eat,' the ground shall be cursed in your labours; in grief you shall eat of it all the days of your life. 18 Thorns and thistles shall spring up to you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat your bread, till you return to the ground from which you were taken. For earth you are, and to earth you shall return.” 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Life, for she is the mother of all who live.
21 And the Lord God made leather tunics for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 And God said, “Behold, Adam has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. . .” 23 And the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of delight, to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 And he cast out Adam, and caused him to dwell opposite the garden of delight. And he stationed the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned about, to guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 4
And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have gained a man through God.” 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And after some days, it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground, an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstborn of his sheep, and of their fat. And God looked with favour upon Abel and his offering, 5 but to Cain and his offering he gave no regard. And Cain was exceedingly grieved, and his face fell. 6 And the Lord God said to Cain, “Why are you grieved, and why is your face fallen? 7 If you have offered rightly, but not rightly divided, have you not sinned? Be quiet. Its desire is for you, but you shall rule it.” 8 And Cain said to Abel his brother, “Let us go into the field.” And it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the Lord God said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. I am not my brother’s keeper, am I?” 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground; 11 and now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, and it does not continue to give you its strength, you shall be in fear and trembling upon the earth.” 13 And Cain said to the Lord God, “My guilt is too great to be forgiven; 14 since you have cast me out this day from the face of the earth; and from your face I shall be hid; and I shall be in fear and trembling upon the earth; and it shall be that whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 And the Lord God said to him, “Not so! Whoever kills Cain will unloose sevenfold vengeance.” And the Lord God appointed a sign for Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of God, and dwelt in the land of Nod, opposite Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch. And he built a city; and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 And to Enoch was born Irad; Irad was the father of Mahalalel; Mahalalel was the father of Methuselah; and Methuselah was the father of Lamech. 19 And Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second, Zillah. 20 And Adah bore Jobel: he was the father of all who dwell in tents and keep cattle; 21 and his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the inventor of harp and lyre. 22 And Zillah, she also bore Tobel: he was a hammer-wielding forger of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tobel was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, hearken to my speech; for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my bruising. 24 Sevenfold vengeance for Cain; but for Lamech, seventy times seven.”
25 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth, saying, “For God has raised up for me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” 26 To Seth also was born a son; and he called his name Enos. This man deemed to call upon the name of the Lord God.
Genesis 5
This is the book of the generations of man: In the day that God made Adam, he made him in the image of God; 2 he made them male and female; and he blessed them, and called his name Adam, in the day that he made them. 3 And Adam lived two hundred and thirty years, and was the father of a son after his appearance, and in his image; and he called his name Seth. 4 And the days that Adam lived after the birth of Seth were seven hundred years, and he was the father of sons and daughters. 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
6 And Seth lived two hundred and five years, and was the father of Enos. 7 And Seth lived after the birth of Enos seven hundred and seven years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
9 And Enos lived a hundred and ninety years, and was the father of Cainan. 10 And Enos lived after the birth of Cainan seven hundred and fifteen years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 11 And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
12 And Cainan lived a hundred and seventy years, and was the father of Mahalalel. 13 And Cainan lived after the birth of Mahalalel seven hundred and forty years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
15 And Mahalalel lived a hundred and sixty-five years, and was the father of Jared. 16 And Mahalalel lived after the birth of Jared seven hundred and thirty years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 17 And all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
18 And Jared lived a hundred and sixty-two years, and was the father of Enoch. 19 And Jared lived after the birth of Enoch eight hundred years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
21 And Enoch lived a hundred and sixty-five years, and was the father of Methuselah. 22 And Enoch was well-pleasing to God after the birth of Methuselah two hundred years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch was well-pleasing to God; and he was not found, for God took him up.
25 And Methuselah lived a hundred and sixty-seven years, and was the father of Lamech. 26 And Methuselah lived after the birth of Lamech eight hundred and two years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
28 And Lamech lived a hundred and eighty-eight years, and was the father of a son; 29 and he called his name Noah, saying, “This one shall give us rest from our labours, from the toil of our hands, and from the ground which the Lord God has cursed.” 30 And Lamech lived after the birth of Noah five hundred and sixty-five years, and was the father of sons and daughters. 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and fifty-three years, and he died.
32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Genesis 6
And it came to pass, when men began to be many upon the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and took themselves wives of all, whichever they chose. 3 And the Lord God said, “My Spirit shall not abide in these men for ever, for they are flesh; but their days shall be a hundred and twenty years.” 4 The giants were upon the earth in those days, and afterwards, when the sons of God went in to the daughters of men, and fathered children for themselves. These were the giants of old, the men of renown.
5 And the Lord God saw that the wickedness of man was multiplied upon the earth, and all that he purposed in his heart was set upon evil continually; 6 and God considered how he had made man upon the earth, and he pondered. 7 And God said, “I will destroy man, whom I have made, from the face of the earth; from man to cattle, and from reptiles to the birds of the air, for I regret that I made them.” 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord God.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a righteous man, being perfect in his generation; and Noah was well-pleasing to God. 10 And Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 And the earth was corrupt before God; and the earth was filled with unrighteousness. 12 And the Lord God beheld the earth, and it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted its way upon the earth. 13 And the Lord God said to Noah, “The appointed time of all mankind has come before me, for the earth is filled with their unrighteousness; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Therefore make for yourself an ark of square timbers; you shall make the ark with compartments, and you shall pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is how you shall make the ark: three hundred cubits the length of the ark, fifty cubits its breadth, and thirty cubits its height. 16 You shall make the ark, gathering it together; and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and you shall make the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 As for me, behold, I bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under heaven; and whatever is upon the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall come into the ark: you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you; 19 and of all the cattle, and of all the reptiles, and of all the beasts, and of all flesh, two by two of all shall you bring into the ark, that they may be nourished with yourself. They shall be male and female. 20 Of all the winged birds after their kind, and of all the cattle after their kind, and of all the reptiles that creep upon the earth after their kind, two by two of all shall come in to you, to be nourished with you, male and female. 21 And you shall take to yourself of all food that is eaten; and you shall gather it to yourself, and it shall be for you and for them to eat.” 22 And Noah did everything; whatever the Lord God commanded him, so he did.
Genesis 7
And the Lord God said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your house; for I have seen you righteous before me in this generation. 2 Of the cattle that are clean, you shall bring in to you seven by seven, male and female; and of the cattle that are not clean, two by two, male and female. 3 And of the birds of the air that are clean, seven by seven, male and female; and of all the birds that are not clean, two by two, male and female, to preserve seed upon all the earth; 4 for yet seven days, and I will bring rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will destroy everything that is raised up, which I have made, from the face of all the earth.” 5 And Noah did everything that the Lord God commanded him.
6 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. 7 And Noah went in, with his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. 8 And of the birds that are clean, and the birds that are not clean; and of the cattle that are clean, and the cattle that are not clean; and of everything that creeps upon the earth, 9 two by two went in to Noah, into the ark, male and female, as God commanded Noah. 10 And it came to pass, after the seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month; in that day did all the fountains of the deep burst forth, and the floodgates of heaven were opened; 12 and there was rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 In that day went in Noah; and Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and Noah’s wife; and the three wives of his sons with him, into the ark. 14 And all the beasts after their kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every reptile that creeps upon the earth after its kind, and every winged bird after its kind 15 went in to Noah, into the ark, two by two, male and female, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded Noah; and the Lord God shut up the ark from outside.
17 And the flood was forty days and forty nights upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bore up the ark; and it was lifted up high above the earth. 18 And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark moved upon the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth, and covered all the high mountains that were under heaven. 20 Fifteen cubits above were the waters lifted up, and covered all the high mountains. 21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth: of the birds, and of the cattle, and of beasts, and every reptile that creeps upon the earth, and every man. 22 And everything, whatever had the breath of life, and all that was upon the dry land, died. 23 And everything that had been raised up upon the face of the earth was destroyed: from man to cattle, and reptiles, and the birds of the air; and they were destroyed from the earth. And Noah alone remained, and those who were with him in the ark. 24 And the waters were lifted up on the earth a hundred and fifty days.
Genesis 8
And God remembered Noah, and all the beasts, and all the cattle, and all the birds, and all the creeping reptiles that were with him in the ark; and God brought a wind upon the earth, and stilled the waters. 2 The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven also were covered over, and the rain from heaven was restrained. 3 And the waters subsided, flowing from the earth; and after a hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. 4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased until the tenth month; and in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen. 6 And it came to pass, after forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; and he sent forth the raven, to see if the waters were abated. 7 And it went out, and did not return until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8 And he sent forth the dove after it to see if the waters were abated from the earth. 9 And the dove, finding no rest for her feet, returned to him into the ark, for the waters were upon the face of all the earth; and putting forth his hand, he took her, and brought her in to himself, into the ark. 10 And he waited another seven days, and again sent forth the dove out of the ark. 11 And the dove returned to him toward evening; and she had a sprig of olive leaf in her mouth, so Noah knew that the waters were abated from the earth. 12 And he waited another seven days, and again sent forth the dove, but she did not return to him any more. 13 And it came to pass, in the six hundred and first year of Noah’s life, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah uncovered the roof of the ark which he had made, and saw that the waters were dried up from the face of the earth. 14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
15 And the Lord God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Come forth out of the ark: you, and your wife, and your sons, and your sons’ wives with you; 17 and all the beasts that are with you, and all flesh, from birds to cattle, and every reptile that creeps upon the earth, bring forth with yourself; and be increased and multiplied upon the earth.” 18 And Noah went forth, and his wife, and his sons, and his sons’ wives with him; 19 and all the beasts, and all the cattle, and every bird, and every reptile that creeps upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark. 20 And Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of all the clean cattle, and of all the clean birds, and offered a whole burnt offering upon the altar. 21 And the Lord God smelled a fragrant smell; and the Lord God said in his heart, “Never again will I curse the ground because of the works of men; for the thoughts of man are carefully set upon evil from his youth; nor will I again smite all living flesh, as I have done. 22 All the days of the earth seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and spring, and day and night shall not cease.”
Genesis 9
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be increased and multiplied, fill the earth and have dominion over it; 2 and the trembling and fear of you shall be upon all the beasts of the earth, upon all the birds of the air, upon all that moves upon the earth, and upon all the fish of the sea; into your hand have I given them; 3 and every reptile that lives shall be food for you; even as the garden herb have I given you all things. 4 But flesh with the blood of life you shall not eat; 5 for also the blood of your lives at the hand of every beast will I require; and at the hand of a man’s brother will I require the life of the man. 6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, in like manner shall his blood be shed; for I made man in the image of God. 7 As for you, be increased and multiplied; fill the earth and have dominion over it.”
8 And God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “And behold, I establish my covenant with you, with your seed after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: of birds, and of cattle, and all the beasts of the earth with you, of everything that comes out of the ark. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be destroyed any more by the waters of a flood; nor shall there again be a flood of waters to destroy all the earth.” 12 And the Lord God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I cause the clouds to gather over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And my bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between me and the earth, and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.”
18 And the sons of Noah, who came out of the ark, were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three are the sons of Noah; from these were they scattered abroad upon all the earth.
20 And Noah began to be a tiller of the ground; and he planted a vineyard. 21 And he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay naked in his house. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren outside. 23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their backs; and they went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, so they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and he knew what his younger son had done to him. 25 And he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brethren.” 26 And he said, “Blessed be the Lord God of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant of servants. 27 God shall enlarge Japheth; he shall dwell in the houses of Shem, and Canaan shall be his servant.”
28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.
Genesis 10
These are the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Elisha, and Tobel, and Meshech, and Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the sons of Javan: Elisha, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Rhodim. 5 From these were the isles of the nations divided in their lands, each according to his tongue, after their tribes, and in their nations.
6 And the sons of Ham: Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. 7 And the sons of Cush: Sheba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecah; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 And Cush was the father of Nimrod. He began to be a mighty one upon the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord God; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod, the mighty hunter before the Lord God"; 10 and the beginning of his kingdom was Babylon, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land went forth Asshur, and built Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, 12 and Dashe, between Nineveh and Calah: this is the great city. 13 And Mizraim was the father of the Ludim, and the Enemetim, and the Lehabim, and the Nephtalim, and the Patrosonim, 14 and the Caslonim (whence came the Philistines), and the Caphtorim. 15 And Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, 16 and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Gergesite, and the Hivite, and the Arukite, 17 and the Asenite, and the Aradite, and the Samarite, and the Hamathite. 18 And after this were the tribes of the Canaanites spread abroad. 19 And the region of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as you go toward Gerar and Gaza, as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and Admah and Zeboim, as far as Dasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, in their tribes, after their tongues, in their lands, and in their nations.
21 And to Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, sons were born. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and Cainan. 23 And the sons of Aram: Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Meshech. 24 And Arphaxad was the father of Cainan, Cainan was the father of Salah, and Salah was the father of Eber. 25 And to Eber were born two sons: the name of the first was Peleg, for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 And Joktan was the father of Elmodad, and Saleth, and Sarmoth, and Jerah, and Hadoram, and Ebal, and Diklah, 27 And Eval, and Abimael, and Sheba, 28 And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. 29 All these were the sons of Joktan; 30 and their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar, a mountain of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, in their tribes, after their tongues, in their lands, and in their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, and after their nations. From these were the isles of the nations spread abroad upon the earth after the flood.
Genesis 11
And all the earth was of one language, and one voice. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there. 3 And a man said to his neighbour, “Come, let us make brick, and bake them with fire.” And the brick was to them as stone, and pitch as clay. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make a name for ourselves, before we be scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth.” 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the sons of men had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are all of one race and one language, and this they begin to do; and now nothing will fail them of anything on which they set their heart to do. 7 Come, let us go down, and there confuse their tongue, so that each may not understand the voice of his neighbour.” 8 So the Lord scattered them thence abroad upon the face of all the earth; and they ceased from building the city and the tower. 9 Therefore the name of it is called Confusion, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth, and thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
10 These are the generations of Shem: Shem was a hundred years old when he became the father of Arphaxad two years after the flood. 11 And Shem lived after the birth of Arphaxad five hundred years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
12 And Arphaxad lived a hundred and thirty-five years, and was the father of Cainan. 13 And Arphaxad lived after the birth of Cainan four hundred years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years, and was the father of Salah. And Cainan lived after the birth of Salah three hundred and thirty years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
14 And Salah lived a hundred and thirty years, and was the father of Eber. 15 And Salah lived after the birth of Eber three hundred and thirty years, and was the father of sons and daughter; and he died.
16 And Eber lived a hundred and thirty-four years, and was the father of Peleg. 17 And Eber lived after the birth of Peleg two hundred and seventy years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
18 And Peleg lived a hundred and thirty years, and was the father of Reu. 19 And Peleg lived after the birth of Reu two hundred and nine years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
20 And Reu lived a hundred and thirty-two years, and was the father of Serug. 21 And Reu lived after the birth of Serug two hundred and seven years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
22 And Serug lived a hundred and thirty years, and was the father of Nahor. 23 And Serug lived after the birth of Nahor two hundred years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
24 And Nahor lived a hundred and seventy-nine years, and was the father of Terah. 25 And Nahor lived after the birth of Terah a hundred and twenty-five years, and was the father of sons and daughters; and he died.
26 And Terah lived seventy years, and was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
27 Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran was the father of Lot. 28 And Haran died in the presence of Terah his father in the land of his birth, in the land of the Chaldeans. 29 And Abram and Nahor took themselves wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sara; and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. 30 But Sara was barren, and she bore no child. 31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sara his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and brought them out of the land of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan; and they went as far as Harran, and dwelt there. 32 And all the days of Terah in the land of Harran were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Harran.
Genesis 12
And the Lord said to Abram, “Get out from your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, and come into the land which I will show you; 2 and I will make you into a great nation; and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. 3 And I will bless them who bless you, and them who curse you I will curse; and in you shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.” 4 And Abram departed, just as the Lord had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Harran. 5 And Abram took Sara his wife, and Lot, his brother’s son, and all their possessions which they had gained, and every soul which they had gained out of Harran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram travelled the length of the land as far as the place of Shechem, by the high oak. At that time the Canaanites dwelt in the land. 7 And the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “To your seed I will give this land.” And Abram built there an altar to the Lord, who appeared to him. 8 And he departed thence to the mountain east of Bethel; and there he pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east; and he built there an altar to the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. 9 And Abram departed; and he journeyed on, and encamped in the wilderness.
10 And there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass, when Abram drew near to enter into Egypt, that Abram said to Sara his wife, “I know that you are a beautiful woman; 12 therefore it shall come to pass that when the Egyptians shall see you they shall say, ‘This is his wife'; and they will kill me, but they will save you alive. 13 Say therefore, ‘I am his sister,' that it may be well with me for your sake, and my soul shall live because of you.” 14 And it came to pass that when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that his wife was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her, and commended her to Pharaoh; and they brought her into Pharaoh’s house. 16 And they treated Abram well for her sake; and he had sheep, and calves, and asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and mules, and camels. 17 And God plagued Pharaoh and his house with great and severe afflictions on account of Sara, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, “What have you done to me? Why did you not tell me that she is your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,' so I took her to myself as a wife? And now, behold, your wife is before you; take her, and go!” 20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning Abram, to send him on his way, with his wife, and all that he had.
Genesis 13
And Abram went up out of Egypt: he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the wilderness. 2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went whence he had come, into the wilderness as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the first, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the beginning; and there Abram called upon the name of the Lord. 5 And Lot also, who went with Abram, had sheep, and oxen, and tents. 6 And there was no room in the land for them to dwell together; for their possessions were many, and there was no room in the land for them to dwell together. 7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle; at that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelt in the land. 8 And Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brethren. 9 Behold, is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me; if you go to the left, I will go to the right; and if you go to the right, I will go to the left.” 10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the country round about the Jordan, that it was all watered, before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of God, and like the land of Egypt, as you go toward Zoar. 11 And Lot chose for himself all the country round about the Jordan; and Lot departed toward the east; and they were separated, each from his brother. 12 So Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan; and Lot dwelt in a city of the country round about, and pitched his tent in Sodom. 13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before God exceedingly.
14 And God said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are now, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward; 15 for all the land which you see I will give to you, and to your seed for ever. 16 And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, your seed shall also be numbered. 17 Arise, go through the length and breadth of the land; for I will give it to you, and to your seed for ever.” 18 Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt by the oak of Mamre, which is in Hebron; and there he built an altar to the Lord.
Genesis 14
And it came to pass in the reign of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations; 2 that they made war with Balla king of Sodom, Birsa king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Balak, which is Zoar. 3 All these were joined together in the valley of salt, which is the salt sea. 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer; but in the thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the giants that were in Ashteroth and Karnaim, and strong nations together with them: the Ommaim that were in the city of Shaveh, 6 and the Horites that were in the mountains of Seir, as far as the terebinth of Paran, which is in the wilderness. 7 And they returned, and came to the well of judgement, which is Kadesh, and smote all the princes of Amalek, and the Amorites that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar. 8 Then the king of Sodom went out, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Balak, which is Zoar, and set themselves in array against them for battle in the valley of salt: 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar: the four kings against the five. 10 And the valley of salt was full of bitumen pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountains. 11 And they took all the horses of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and departed. 12 And they also took Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, and his goods, and departed, for he dwelt in Sodom.
13 And there came one who had escaped, and told Abram the wanderer, for he dwelt by the oak of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were Abram’s confederates. 14 And when Abram heard that his kinsman Lot had been taken captive, he numbered them that were born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them as far as Dan. 15 And he came upon them by night, he and his servants; and he smote them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the horses of Sodom; and he brought back his kinsman Lot, with all his possessions, and also the women, and the people.
17 And the king of Sodom came out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s field. 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine; and he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed Abram, and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, who made heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And Abram gave him the tenth part of all. 21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the men, and take the horses for yourself.” 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to the Lord God Most High, who made heaven and earth, 23 that not even from a cord to a shoe latchet, will I take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich,' 24 except what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Eshcol, Aner, and Mamre; they shall take their portion.”
Genesis 15
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 And Abram said, “O Master Lord, what will you give me? As for me, I die childless, but for the son of Masek, born in my house, this Eliezer of Damascus.” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no seed and one born in my house shall be my heir.” 4 And immediately the voice of the Lord came to him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir; but he who shall come out of you, he shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said to him, “Look up now to the heavens, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” And he said to him, “So shall your seed be.” 6 And Abram believed in God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness. 7 And he said to him, “I am the God who brought you out from the land of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit.” 8 And he said, “O Master Lord, how shall I know that I shall inherit it?” 9 And he said to him, “Take me a heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a pigeon.” 10 And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and set them each opposite the other; but the birds he did not divide. 11 And when birds came down upon the carcases, upon the divided pieces, Abram sat with them. 12 And at the going down of the sun, a stupor came upon Abram; and behold, a fear of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said to Abram, “You shall surely know that your seed shall be sojourners in a land that is not their own; and they shall serve them; and they shall humiliate them four hundred years. 14 And that nation, whom they shall serve, I will judge; and after these things they shall come back here with great substance. 15 And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age; 16 and in the fourth generation they shall come here again, for the sins of the Amorites are not yet complete.” 17 And toward the going down of the sun, there was a flame; and behold, a smoking furnace and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18 On that day the Lord established a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your seed I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 the Kenites, the Kenezites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perezites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, the Gergesites, and the Jebusites.”
Genesis 16
Now Sara Abram’s wife bore him no children; but she had an Egyptian maidservant, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sara said to Abram, “Behold, the Lord has kept me from bearing; go in therefore to my maidservant, that I may have children by her.” And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sara. 3 And Sara Abram’s wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her own maidservant, after Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan ten years, and gave her to Abram her husband, to be his wife. 4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 And Sara said to Abram, “I am done wrong by you. I gave my maidservant into your bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. May God judge between me and you.” 6 And Abram said to Sara, “Behold, your maidservant is in your hands; deal with her as you please.” And when Sara treated her harshly, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the Lord found her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur. 8 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Hagar, Sara’s maidservant, whence do you come; and whither will you go?” And she said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sara.” 9 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself into her hands.” 10 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “I will multiply your seed exceedingly, so that it shall not be numbered for multitude.” 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael, for the Lord has heard you in your humiliation. 12 He will be a man of the field, his hand against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” 13 And Hagar called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, Thou-art-God-who-sees-me; for she said, “I have also seen the face of him who sees me.” 14 Therefore she called the well, The-well-of-him-whose-face-I-have-seen; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore him, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael for Abram.
Genesis 17
And it came to pass, when Abram was ninety-nine years old, that the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, “I am your God: be well-pleasing before me, and be blameless; 2 and I will establish my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” 3 And Abram fell upon his face, and God spoke to him, saying, 4 “As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations; 5 neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of many nations. 6 And I will cause you to increase exceedingly, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you, and to your seed after you. 8 And I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land in which you sojourn, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.” 9 And God said to Abraham, “You shall keep my covenant: you, and your seed after you in their generations. 10 And this is the covenant which you shall keep, between me and you and your seed after you in their generations: every male among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 And a child of eight days shall be circumcised among you, every male in your generations, whoever is born in the house, or bought with money, of every son of a foreigner, who is not of your seed. 13 He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with money, must surely be circumcised; and my covenant shall be upon your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin; that soul shall be utterly destroyed from his people, for he has broken my covenant.”
15 And God said to Abraham, “As for Sara your wife, her name shall no more be called Sara, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and give you a son by her; and I will bless him, and he shall become a nation, and kings of peoples shall come forth from him.” 17 And Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall he who is a hundred years old be the father of a son; and shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Let Ishmael live before you!” 19 And God said to Abraham, “Behold, Sarah your wife shall certainly bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, to be God to him, and to his seed after him. 20 As for Ishmael, behold, I have heard you; and behold, I have blessed him, and will cause him to increase, and will multiply him exceedingly; he shall be the father of twelve peoples, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear you at this appointed time in the next year.” 22 And he finished talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.
23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with money, every male of the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised their foreskins at the appointed time, that same day, according as God had told him. 24 And Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin; 25 and Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 At the appointed time, that same day, Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his house, both those who were born in his house, and those who were bought with money out of foreign nations, were circumcised with him.
Genesis 18
And God appeared to him by the oak of Mamre, as he sat in the door of his tent at mid-day. 2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, three men stood before him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself upon the ground, 3 and said, “O Lord, if indeed I have found grace in your eyes, do not depart from your servant; 4 let water now be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree; 5 and I will fetch bread, and you shall eat; and after that you shall go on your way, since for this have you turned aside to your servant.” And they said, “Do this, as you have said.” 6 And Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said to her, “Make haste, and mix three measures of fine flour, and bake a loaf in the ashes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf tender and good; and he gave it to a servant, and he hastened to prepare it. 8 And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared; and he set it before them, and they ate; and he stood by them under the tree.
9 And he said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he answered and said, “Behold, in the tent.” 10 And he said, “I will surely return to you at the appointed time, to the hour; and Sarah your wife shall bear a son.” And Sarah heard by the tent door, which was behind him. 11 Now both Abraham and Sarah were old, and advanced in days; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the way of women. 12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “It has not yet happened to me until now, and my lord also is old.” 13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh within herself, saying, ‘Shall I indeed surely bear, I who am old?’? 14 Shall anything be impossible for God? I will return to you at the appointed time, to the hour; and Sarah shall bear a son.” 15 And Sarah denied, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And he said to her, “No, but you did laugh.”
16 And the men rose up thence, and looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah; and Abraham went with them to send them on their way. 17 And the Lord said, “I shall not hide from Abraham my servant what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and populous nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him. 19 For I know that he will order his sons and his household after him; and they shall keep the ways of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham all that he has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah has increased before me, and their sins are very great. 21 I will go down therefore, and see if they have done altogether according to their cry which is coming before me; and if not, I will know.” 22 And the men turned away thence, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before the Lord. 23 And Abraham drew near, and said, “Will you not destroy righteous and wicked together, and so the righteous shall be as the wicked? 24 What if there should be fifty righteous in the city? Will you destroy them, and not spare the whole place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 By no means shall you do such a thing, to destroy righteous with wicked, and so the righteous shall be as the wicked, by no means. Should not he who judges all the earth do justice?” 26 And the Lord said, “If there should be in Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole city, and all the place for their sake.” 27 And Abraham answered and said, “Now I have begun to speak to my Lord, I who am earth and ashes. 28 What if the fifty righteous should be reduced to forty-five? Will you destroy all the city for the sake of the five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 And he continued to speak to him, and said, “What if forty should be found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.” 30 And he said, “What, O Lord, if I should speak? What if thirty should be found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the thirty.” 31 And he said, “Since I am able to speak to the Lord, what if twenty should be found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find twenty there.” 32 And he said, “What, O Lord, if I should speak yet this once? What if ten should be found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.” 33 And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
Genesis 19
And the two angels came into Sodom towards evening; and Lot sat by the gate of Sodom. And seeing them, Lot rose up to meet them; and he fell down with his face upon the ground. 2 And he said, “Behold, my lords, turn aside to the house of your servant and rest, and wash your feet; and you shall rise up early, and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will take our rest in the street.” 3 But he urged them, and they turned aside to him, and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from young to old, all the people at once. 5 And they called out to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 And Lot went out to them in the doorway, and shut the door behind him, 7 and said to them, “By no means, brethren; do not act so wickedly. 8 I have two daughters who have not known a man; I will bring them out to you, and you may to them as you please; only do no injustice to these men, since for this cause have they come under the shelter of my roof.” 9 And they said to him, “Stand back there! Did you come in to sojourn, or to be a judge? Now therefore we will deal worse with you than with them.” And they pressed very hard upon the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. 10 And the men put forth their hands, and drew Lot in to themselves, into the house; and they shut the door of the house. 11 And they smote the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, from small to great; and they were disabled from seeking the door.
12 And the men said to Lot, “Do you have here sons-in-law, sons, or daughters? Or if you have anyone else in the city, bring them out of this place; 13 for we will destroy this place, because their cry has risen up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” 14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Rise up, and get out of this place, for the Lord will destroy the city.” But he seemed to be joking in the eyes of his sons-in-law. 15 And when morning came, the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Rise up, and take your wife and your two daughters who you have, and depart, lest you be destroyed together with the iniquities of the city.” 16 And they were troubled; and the angels took hold of his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that they said, “Be sure to save your own life; do not look behind you, nor stay in all the neighbourhood. Escape to the mountain, lest you also be taken.” 18 And Lot said to them, “I pray you, O Lord, 19 since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your justice, which you are doing for me in saving my life, and I am unable to escape to the mountain, lest evil should take me, and I die; 20 behold, this city is nearby for me to flee there; it is a little one, and I shall be safe there – is it not a little one? – and my soul shall live because of you.” 21 And he said to him, “Behold, I have respected you concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22 Make haste therefore to escape there, for I can do nothing until you have arrived there.” Therefore the name of that city was called Zoar. 23 The sun came out upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. 24 And the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone, and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 25 and he overthrew those cities, and all the neighbourhood, and all who dwelt in the cities, and that which grew out of the earth. 26 But his wife looked back, and became a pillar of salt.
27 And Abraham rose up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. 28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward their neighbourhood and saw; and behold, a flame went up from the earth like the smoke of a furnace. 29 And it came to pass, when the Lord destroyed all the cities of the country round about, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain: he, and his two daughters with him, for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he dwelt in the cave: he, and his two daughters with him. 31 And the elder said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no one upon the earth who will come in to us, according to the custom of all the earth. 32 Come, let us give our father wine to drink and sleep with him, and we shall raise up seed by our father.” 33 And they gave their father wine to drink that night; and the elder went in and slept with her father that night; and he did not know of her lying down, nor of her rising. 34 And it came to pass, the next day, that the elder said to the younger, “Behold, I slept with our father last night. Let us give him wine to drink tonight also; and you shall go in and sleep with him, and we shall raise up seed by our father. 35 And they gave their father wine to drink that night also; and the younger went in and slept with her father; and he did not know of her lying down, nor of her rising. 36 Thus the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father. 37 And the elder bore a son, and called his name Moab, saying, “Out of my father”: he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 And the younger also bore a son, and called his name Ammon, saying, “Son of my people”: he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
Genesis 20
And Abraham removed thence into the land toward the south, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur. And he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” lest the men of the city should kill him because of her. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3 And God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said, “Behold, you shall die on account of the woman you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” 4 But Abimelech had not touched her; and he said, “O Lord, will you destroy an unknowing and righteous nation? 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’; and she say to me, ‘He is my brother’? With purity of heart and righteousness of hands have I done this.” 6 And God said to him in a dream, “As for me, I knew that you did this with purity of heart; and I restrained you that you might not sin against me, therefore I did not permit you to touch her. 7 Now therefore restore to the man his wife, for he is a prophet; and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you will die: you, and all that are yours.” 8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning; and he called all of his servants, and told all these things in their ears; and the men were very much afraid. 9 And Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us, and how have we sinned against you, that you have brought upon me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me a thing that ought not to be done.” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you have done this?” 11 And Abraham said, “Because I said, ‘Surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me on account of my wife.’ 12 Yet truly she is my sister, by my father, but not by my mother; and she became my wife; 13 and it came to pass, when God brought me out from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is the righteousness which you shall do for me: in every place where we enter in, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” 14 And Abimelech took a thousand didrachmae, sheep, and calves, and menservants, and maidservants, and gave them to Abraham; and he restored to him Sarah his wife. 15 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “Behold, my land is before you; dwell wherever you please.” 16 And to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand didrachmae. It shall be for the honour of your face: to you, and to all who are with you; but in all things speak the truth.” 17 And Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants, and they bore children; 18 for the Lord had securely closed every womb in the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
Genesis 21
And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said; and the Lord did for Sarah as he had spoken. 2 And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the appointed time, as the Lord had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac on the eighth day, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was a hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, “The Lord has made laughter for me, for whoever hears will rejoice with me.” 7 And she said, “Who will tell Abraham that Sarah is nursing a child? For I have borne a son in my old age.”
8 And the child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac his son was weaned. 9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with Isaac her son; 10 and she said to Abraham, “Cast out this servant-girl and her son; for the son of this servant-girl shall not be heir with my son Isaac.” 11 And the thing seemed very hard in the sight of Abraham, concerning his son. 12 And God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be hard in your sight, concerning the child, and concerning the servant-girl. Whatever Sarah may say to you, hearken to her voice, for in Isaac shall seed be reckoned to you. 13 As for the son of this servant-girl, I will make him into a great nation, because he is your seed.” 14 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a skin of water, and gave them to Hagar, putting the child upon her shoulders, and sent her away; and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness, by the well of the oath. 15 And when the water failed out of the skin, she cast the child under one of the fir trees. 16 And she went, and sat opposite him at a distance, about a bowshot; for she said, “Let me not see the death of my child.” And she sat opposite him; and the child cried aloud, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the child from the place where he was; and the angel of God called Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What is it, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the child from the place where he is. 18 Arise, take the child, and hold him in your hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of living water; and she went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the child drink. 20 And God was with the child, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife from the land of Egypt.
22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech, and Ahuzzath his companion, and Phicol the chief commander of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do. 23 Now therefore swear to me by God that you will not deal unjustly with me, nor with my seed, nor with my name; but according to the justice that I have done to you, so shall you do to me, and to the land in which you have sojourned.” 24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.” 25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech concerning the wells of water which Abimelech’s servants had taken away. 26 And Abimelech said to him, “I did not know who did this thing to you; nor did you tell me, nor did I hear of it, but today.” 27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech; and they both made a covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. 29 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What are these seven ewe lambs of the flock which you have set by themselves?” 30 And Abraham said, “These seven ewe lambs you shall take from me, that they may be a witness to me, that I have dug this well.” 31 Therefore he called the name of that place, ‘Well of Swearing,’ because there they swore, both of them. 32 And they made a covenant at the well of the oath; and Abimelech rose up, and Ahuzzath his companion, and Phicol the chief commander of his army; and they returned to the land of the Philistines. 33 And Abraham planted a field at the well of the oath, and called there upon the name of the Lord, Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
Genesis 22
And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham, Abraham”; and he said, “Behold, here I am.” 2 And he said, “Take your beloved son Isaac whom you love, and go into the high country; and offer him there for a whole burnt offering upon one of the mountains, whichever I may tell you.” 3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass; and he took with him two servants, and Isaac his son, and split wood for a whole burnt offering; and he rose up and went, and came to the place of which God had told him on the third day. 4 Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said to his servants, “Stay with the ass, and I and the lad will pass through here; and when we have worshipped, we will return to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood for the whole burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took both the fire and the knife in his hand, and they went both together. 7 And Isaac said to Abraham his father, “Father”; and he said, “What is it, child?” And he said, “Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the whole burnt offering?” 8 And Abraham said, “God will see for himself a sheep for the whole burnt offering, child.” And they went both together. 9 And they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built there an altar, and laid the wood on it; and he bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham”; and he said, “Behold, here I am.” 12 And he said, “Do not lay your hand upon the lad, nor do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, and have not spared even your beloved son for my sake.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked; and behold, a ram held by the horns in a thicket for Sabek; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it as a whole burnt offering in the place of Isaac his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place, ‘The Lord Has Seen’; as it is said to this day, “In the mountain of the Lord it was seen.” 15 And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven the second time, saying, 16 “By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, that because you have done this thing, and did not spare even your beloved son for my sake, 17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your seed, like the stars of heaven, and like the sand which is by the sea shore; and your seed shall inherit the cities of their enemies. 18 And by your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you obeyed my voice.” 19 And Abraham returned to his servants, and they rose up and went together to the well of the oath; and Abraham dwelt by the well of the oath.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah also has borne sons to Nahor your brother: 21 Uz the firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of the Syrians, 22 and Chesed, and Azav, and Phaldes, and Jaldaph, and Bethuel.” 23 And Bethuel was the father of Rebekah: these eight sons Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tabek, and Taham, and Tochos, and Maachah.
Genesis 23
And the life of Sarah was a hundred and twenty-seven years. 2 And Sarah died in the city of Arbok, which is in the valley (this is Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to beat himself for Sarah, and to mourn. 3 And Abraham rose up from his dead, and Abraham spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, 4 “I am a foreigner, and a sojourner with you. Give me a possession of a burying place with you, and I will bury my dead away from me.” 5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying, “No my lord, 6 but hear us; you are a prince from God among us. In the choice of our tombs bury your dead; none of us will withhold his tomb from you, that you may bury your dead there.” 7 And Abraham rose up, and bowed down to the people of the land, to the sons of Heth; 8 and Abraham spoke to them, saying, “If you have it in your soul for me to bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and speak on my behalf to Ephron the son of Zohar; 9 and let him give me the double cave which he has, which is at the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth let him give it to me for a possession of a burying place among you.” 10 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered and spoke to Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth, and of all who came into the city, saying, 11 “In the presence of our kindred, my lord, hear me also. The field, and the cave which is in it, I give to you; before all of my fellow citizens have I given it to you; bury your dead.” 12 And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land; 13 and he said to Ephron aloud before the people of the land, “Since you are before me, hear me. Take from me the money for the field, and I will bury my dead there.” 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying, 15 “Not so my lord, I have heard you; the land is worth four hundred didrachmae of silver, but what is that between me and you? Bury your dead.” 16 And Abraham hearkened to Ephron; and Abraham restored to Ephron the money, which he had spoken in the ears of the sons of Heth: four hundred didrachmae of silver approved by merchants. 17 And the field of Ephron, in which was the double cave, which was before Mamre: the field, and the cave which was in it, and every tree which was in the field, and all that was within its borders round about were made sure 18 to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, and of all who came into the city. 19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the double cave of the field which is before Mamre (this is Hebron), in the land of Canaan; 20 and the field, and the cave which was in it, were made sure to Abraham for a possession of a burying place by the sons of Heth.
Genesis 24
And Abraham was old, and advanced in days; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said to the eldest servant of his household, who ruled over all that was his, “Put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I adjure you by the Lord, the God of heaven, and God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son Isaac of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country, where I was born, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac from there.” 5 And the servant said to him, “What if the woman will not be willing to follow me into this land? Shall I bring your son back to the land whence you came?” 6 And Abraham said to him, “Be careful for yourself that you do not bring my son there again. 7 The Lord, the God of heaven, and God of the earth, who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to you, and to your seed’; he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 And if the woman is not willing to follow you into this land, you shall be clear from my oath; only do not bring my son there again.” 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning the matter.
10 And the servant took ten camels of his master’s camels, and some of all the good things of his master with himself; and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he rested the camels outside the city by the well of water toward evening, at the time when the women go out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Lord God of my master Abraham, prosper my way before me today, and show mercy to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water; 14 And it shall be that the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she shall say to me, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels until they have finished drinking,’ shall be she whom you have prepared for your servant Isaac; and by this I shall know that you have shown mercy to my master Abraham.” 15 And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking in his heart, that behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, having her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the young woman was very beautiful in appearance; she was a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Let me drink a little water from your pitcher.” 18 And she said, “Drink, my lord”; and she made haste, and let down her pitcher upon her arm, and let him drink until he had finished drinking. 19 And she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have all drunk.” 20 And she hastened to empty her pitcher into the trough, and ran to the well to draw again, and drew water for all the camels. 21 And the man examined her closely but held his peace, to know whether the Lord had prospered his way or not. 22 And it came to pass when all the camels had finished drinking, that the man took golden earrings, each a drachm in weight, and two bracelets for her hands, of the weight of ten gold pieces; 23 and he asked her and said, “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge in?” 24 And she said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 And she said to him, “We have both straw and fodder in plenty, and room to lodge in.” 26 And being content, the man bowed down and worshipped the Lord, and said, 27 “Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld his righteousness and truth from my master. As for me, the Lord has prospered my way to the house of my master’s brother.”
28 And the girl ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things. 29 And Rebekah had a brother, whose name was Laban; and Laban ran to the man outside by the well. 30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earrings and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is how the man spoke to me,” that he went to the man who stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said to him, “Here, come in, thou blessed of the Lord; why do you stand outside? I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.” 32 And the man came into the house; and he unsaddled the camels, and gave straw and fodder for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and for the men’s feet who were with him. 33 And he set bread for him to eat; but he said, “I will not eat, until I have told my errand.” And he said, “Speak!”
34 And he said, “I am Abraham’s servant; 35 and the Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and he has given him sheep, and calves, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore my master a son in his old age, and he has given him all that he has. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, in their land; 38 but you shall go to the house of my father, and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son from there.’ 39 And I said to my master, ‘What if the woman will not come with me?’ 40 And he said to me, ‘The Lord God, before whom I have been well-pleasing, he will send his angel with you, and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my kindred, and from my father’s house. 41 Then you shall be clear from my oath, for when you come to my kindred, if they do not give you one, you shall be clear from my oath.’ 42 And I came today to the well, and said, ‘O Lord God of my master Abraham, if you prosper my way, in which I now go, 43 behold, I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water; and it shall be the young woman to whom I shall say, “Let me drink a little water from your pitcher,” 44 and she shall say to me, “Drink, and I will draw water for your camels also”; she shall be the woman whom the Lord has prepared for his servant Isaac, and by this I shall know that you have shown mercy to my master Abraham.’ 45 And it came to pass, before I had finished speaking in my heart, that Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the well to draw water; and I said to her, ‘Let me drink,’ 46 and she made haste, and let down her pitcher upon her arm, away from herself, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also’; so I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 And I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you? Tell me!’ And she said, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.’ And I put the earrings upon her, and the bracelets upon her hands; 48 and being content, I bowed down and worshipped the Lord; and I blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, who had truly prospered my way, to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 If, therefore, you will show mercy and righteousness toward my master, tell me; but if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.” 50 And Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “This command has come from the Lord, therefore we cannot speak against you bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her, and go; and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as the Lord has spoken.” 52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard these words, that he bowed down upon the earth to the Lord. 53 And the servant brought forth vessels of silver and gold, and clothing; and he gave them to Rebekah, and gave gifts to her brother, and to her mother. 54 And they ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and fell asleep.
And he rose up in the morning, and said, “Send me away, that I may return to my master.” 55 And her brother and mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us about ten days, and after that she shall go.” 56 And he said to them, “Do not hinder me, since the Lord has prospered my way; send me away, that I may return to my master.” 57 And they said, “We will call the young woman, and inquire at her mouth.” 58 And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, with her possessions, and Abraham’s servant, and those with him. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “You are our sister; be mother of thousands of ten thousands, and may your seed inherit the cities of their adversaries.” 61 And Rebekah arose, with her maidservants; and they mounted the camels, and went with the man; and the servant took Rebekah, and departed.
62 And Isaac passed through by way of the wilderness from the well of the vision; and he dwelt in the country toward the south west. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field towards evening; and lifting up his eyes, he saw camels coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac, and leaped down from the camel. 65 And she said to the servant, “Who is that man, who walks in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “This is my master”; and she took her veil, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things he had done. 67 And Isaac went into his mother’s house, and took Rebekah; and she became his wife, and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted concerning Sarah his mother.
Genesis 25
Then again Abraham took a wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 And she bore him Zimran, and Jezan, and Madal, and Midian, and Jeshbok, and Sokeh. 3 And Jezan was the father of Teman, Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Reuel, and Nabdeel, and Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leumim. 4 The sons of Midian: Gephar, and Aphir, and Enoch, and Abira, and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.
5 And Abraham gave all his possessions to Isaac his son. 6 but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he yet lived, toward the east, into the east country. 7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life, which he lived: a hundred and seventy-five years. 8 And Abraham failed and died in a good old age, old and full of days, and was joined to his people. 9 And Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the double cave in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre; 10 the field and the cave which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife. 11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac his son; and Isaac dwelt by the well of the vision.
12 And these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maidservant, bore to Abraham: 13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, according to the names of their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; and Kedar, and Nabdeel, and Mibsam, 14 and Mishma, and Dumah, and Masseh, 15 and Hadar, and Teman, and Jetur, and Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their tents, and by their dwellings; twelve princes according to their nations. 17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, a hundred and thirty-seven years; and he failed and died, and was joined to his kindred. 18 And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, that is before the face of Egypt, as you go toward Assyria; and he dwelt in the presence of all his brethren.
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: 20 Abraham was the father of Isaac. And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Mesopotamian Syria, the sister of Laban the Syrian, to himself as wife. 21 And Isaac besought the Lord concerning Rebekah his wife, because she was barren; and God heard him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 And the children leapt within her, and she said, "If this is about to happen to me, then why this to me?" And she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be set apart from your belly; and the one people shall rise above the other, and the greater shall serve the lesser." 24 And her days of giving birth were fulfilled, and behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the firstborn came out red, all over like a rough hide; and she called his name Esau. 26 And after that came out his brother, and his hand took hold of Esau's heel; and she caled his name Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah bore them.
27 And the young men grew; and Esau was a man skilled in hunting, a man of the field, but Jacob was a simple man, dwelling in a house. 28 And Isaac loved Esau, because his hunting brought food for him, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 And Jacob boiled pottage, and Esau came out of the field fainting. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, "Let me taste this red pottage, for I am fainting"; therefore his name was called Edom. 31 And Jacob said to Esau, "Sell me today your birthright." 32 And Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die, and what is this birthright to me?" 33 And Jacob said to him, "Swear to me today"; and he swore to him, so Esau sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave to Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he ate and drank, and rose up and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 26
And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went into Gerar, to Abimelech, king of the Philistines. 2 And the Lord appeared to him, and said, "Do not go down into Egypt, but dwell in the land of which I tell you. 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you, and to your seed, will I give all this land; and I will confirm my oath, which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 And I will multiply your seed like the stars of heaven, and give to your seed all this land; and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; 5 because Abraham your father obeyed my voice, and kept my ordinances, my commandments, my decrees, and my laws." 6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.
7 And the men of the place asked him concerning Rebekah his wife; and he said, "She is my sister"; for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife," lest the men of the place should kill him for Rebekah, because she was beautiful in appearance. 8 And it came to pass, after a long time there, that Abimelech king of Gerar looked through the window, and saw Isaac playing with Rebekah his wife. 9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said to him, "Is she not your wife? Why then did you say, 'She is my sister'?" And Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die because of her.'" 10 And Abimelech said to him, "What have you done to us? One of my family might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought a sin of ignorance upon us." 11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, "Whoever touches this man or his wife will be liable for death." 12 And Isaac sowed in that land, and in the same year received barley a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him. 13 And the man was raised up, increasing in greatness, until he became very great; 14 and he had flocks of sheep, and herds of cattle, and many tilled fields; and the Philistines envied him. 15 And all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go from us; for you have become much stronger than us." 17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. 18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which the servants of Abraham his father had dug; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham his father; and he gave them names, after the names which his father had given them. 19 And Isaac's servants dug in the valley of Gerar, and found there a well of living water. 20 And the herdsmen of Gerar fought with Isaac's herdsmen, saying that the water was theirs; and he called the name of the well Injustice, because he had been treated unjustly. 21 And Isaac removed thence, and dug another well; and they disputed about that also; and he called its name Enmity. 22 And he removed thence, and dug another well, and did not fight for it; and he called its name Broad-space, saying, "For now has the Lord made room for us, and made us fruitful in the land."
23 And he went up thence to the well of the oath. 24 And the Lord appeared to him that night, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father; do not be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and will multiply your seed for the sake of Abraham your father." 25 And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and Isaac's servants dug a well there, in the valley of Gerar. 26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his companion, and Phicol the chief commander of his army. 27 And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me, and have sent me away from you?" 28 And they said, "We have surely seen that the Lord is with you; and we said, "Let it now be so between us and you; and let us make a covenant with you, 29 that you will do us no harm; as we have not abhorred you; and as we have treated you well, and sent you away in peace; and now you have been blessed by the Lord." 30 And he made them a feast; and they ate and drank. 31 And rising up in the morning, they swore, each to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them away; and they departed from him in safety. 32 And it came to pass on that day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him about the well which they had dug; and they said to him, "We found no water." 33 And he called it Oath; therefore he called the name of that city Well-of-oath, to this very day.
34 And Esau was forty years old; and he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beoch the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite; 35 and they were contentious toward Isaac and Rebekah.
Genesis 27
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes became dull of sight, he called Esau his eldest son, and said to him, "My son"; and he said to him, "Behold, here am I." 2 And he said, "Behold, I am old; and I do not know the day of my death. 3 Therefore take now your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out into the field; and hunt game for me; 4 and make me savoury food, such as I love; and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless you before I die." 5 And Rebekah heard Isaac speaking to Esau his son. And Esau went into the field to hunt game for his father. 6 And Rebekah said to Jacob her younger son, "Behold, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, 7 'Bring me game, and make me savoury food, that I may eat, and bless you before the Lord before my death.' 8 Now therefore, my son, obey me according to that which I command you. 9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me thence two kids, tender and good; and I will make of them savoury food for your father, such as he loves; 10 and you shall go in to your father, and he shall eat, that your father may bless you before his death." 11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "Esau my brother is a hairy man, but I am a smooth man; 12 my father may perhaps feel me, and I shall be in his eyes like one with contempt; and I shall bring upon myself a curse, and not a blessing." 13 And his mother said to him, "Your curse be upon me, child; only obey my voice, and go and bring them to me." 14 And he went and fetched them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savoury food, such as his father loved. 15 And Rebekah took the fine apparel of Esau her elder son, which was with her in the house, and put it on Jacob her younger son; 16 and she put the skins of the kids around his arms, and upon the smooth parts of his neck; 17 and she gave the savoury food and the bread which she had made into the hands of her son Jacob. 18 And he came in to his father, and said, "My father"; and he said, "Here am I; who are you, child?" 19 And Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau, your firstborn; I have done as you told me; arise, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me." 20 And Isaac said to his son, "What is this that you have found so quickly, child?" And he said, "That which the Lord your God delivered up before me." 21 And Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near to me, and I will feel you, child, whether you are my son Esau or not." 22 And Jacob came near to Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23 And he did not recognise him, because his hands were hairy, like the hands of Esau his brother; and he blessed him, 24 and said, "Are you my son Esau?" And he said, "I am." 25 And he said, "Bring it to me, and I will eat of your game, child, that my soul may bless you." And he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 And Isaac his father said to him, "Come near to me and kiss me, child." 27 And he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him, and said, "Behold, the smell of my son is like the smell of an abundant field which the Lord has blessed. 28 May God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. 29 Let nations serve you, and rulers bow down to you. Be lord over your brother, and your father's sons shall bow down to you. He who curses you shall be cursed, and he who blesses you shall blessed."
30 And it came to pass, after Isaac had ceased from blessing his son Jacob, that as Jacob went out out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from the hunt. 31 And he also made savoury food, and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, "Let my father arise, and eat of his son's game, that your soul may bless me." 32 And Isaac his father said to him, "Who are you?" And he said, "I am your son, your firstborn Esau." 33 And Isaac was very greatly astonished, and said, "Who then is he who hunted game and brought it to me? I also ate of it all before you came, and have blessed him; and he shall be blessed." 34 And it came to pass that when Esau heard the words of Isaac his father, he cried with a loud voice, and was greatly embittered; and he said, "Bless me also, father!" 35 And he said to him, "Your brother came deceitfully, and has taken away your blessing." 36 And he said, "His name is rightly called Jacob; for behold, he has bitten my heel this second time; he took away my birthright, and now he has taken away my blessing." And Esau said to his father, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me, father?" 37 And Isaac answered and said to Esau, "I have made him your lord, and given him all his brethren for servants, and sustained him with corn and wine; and what shall I do for you, child?" 38 And Esau said to his father, "Is there not a blessing for me, father? Bless me now also, father!" And Isaac was pierced to the heart; and Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. 39 And Isaac his father answered and said to him, "Behold, away from the fatness of the earth shall be your dwelling, and away from the dew of heaven from above. 40 By your sword shall you live, and you shall serve your brother; and it shall come to pass that if perchance you should bring him down, you shall loose his yoke from off your neck."
41 And Esau was angry with Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I kill my brother Jacob." 42 And the words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, "Behold, your brother Esau is threatening to kill you. 43 Now therefore, child, obey my voice, and arise; flee into Mesopotamia, to Laban my brother at Harran; 44 and stay with him a few days, 45 until the fury of your brother's anger turn away from you, and he forget what you have done to him; then I will send, and summon you back thence, lest I be made childless by both of you in one day."
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the daughters of the sons of Heth; if Jacob should take a wife of the daughters of this land, what good is life to me?"
Genesis 28
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and commanded him, saying, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Canaanites. 2 Arise and flee to Mesopotamia, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father; and take yourself thence a wife of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother. 3 And my God will bless you, and enlarge you, and multiply you; and you shall become a multitude of nations. 4 And may he give you the blessing of Abraham my father: to you, and to your seed after you; that you may inherit the land of your sojourning, which God gave to Abraham." 5 And Isaac sent Jacob away; and he went into Mesopotamia, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and that he had departed to Mesopotamia of Syria to take himself a wife thence; and that as he blessed him he commanded him, saying, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of the Canaanites; 7 and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and went into Mesopotamia of Syria. 8 And seeing that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac his father, 9 Esau went to Ishmael, and took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael the son of Abraham, the sister of Nebaioth, as a wife, beside the wives that he had.
10 And Jacob departed from the well of the oath, and journeyed towards Harran. 11 And he came upon a certain place, and stayed there, because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of that place, and set it by his head, and lay down in that place. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth, whose top reached to heaven; and the angels of God ascended and descended on it. 13 And the Lord stood over it, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac; fear not; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you, and to your seed; 14 and your seed shall be as the dust of the earth; and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the south, and to the north, and to the east; and in you, and in your seed, shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed. 15 And behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all the way in which you shall go, and will bring you back into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done everything of which I have spoken to you." 16 And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and said, "The Lord is in this place, and I did not know it." 17 And he was afraid, and said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had set there by his head, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place House-of-God; but Ulam-Luz was the name of the city at the first. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, "If the Lord God will be with me, and will keep me in this way in which I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to wear, 21 and will bring me back in safety to my father's house; then shall the Lord be my God; 22 and this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be to me the house of God; and of all that you shall give me, I will surely give you back the tenth part."
